National Executive Board

2024-2025

President - JoAnndria brown

Hometown: Madison, Mississippi

Optometry School: SCO, Southern College of Optometry Class of 2025

Why I chose Optometry: I chose optometry after my junior year of undergrad.  I have always been interested in the healthcare field because my mother is a nurse. I had the pleasure of shadowing my optometrist, and it was a life-changing experience. I enjoyed the way he educated his patients with diabetes, hypertension, and glaucoma. All of these conditions are prominent in the black community, and I want to educate my patients about these vision-threatening diseases.

Passions outside of Optometry:  I love to go rock climbing 3-4 times a week.

Interesting Fact: I pole-vaulted in high school and placed #1 in the state.

Why NOSA:  NOSA has poured so much into my optometry journey. It was the first organization that I joined in optometry school. It is a safe space filled with many resources to have a successful optometry journey as a minority.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: Change is inevitable, growth is optional.

Vice President - Taylor Greaves

Hometown: Brooklyn, New York

Optometry School: SUNY College of Optometry, Class of 2025

Why I chose Optometry: I went for an eye exam in the 11th grade and my mother suggested I’d look into optometry. Since then I’ve been a bit obsessed with the profession. Now that I’m at the tail end of my program, I look back at my journey with no regrets. Optometry is the future and I am so grateful to be a part of it.

Passions outside of optometry: traveling, binging shows, people watching, thrifting, journaling, coming up with new hairstyles.

Interesting fact: My first name is my mom’s maiden name.

Why I chose NOSA: The minority community in optometry school is very small but NOSA gave me a sense of community and belonging. It has allowed me to work alongside like-minded individuals who are passionate about increasing the amount of black and brown faces in optometry.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: Choose your study partners wisely, seek help from your professors early on in the semester, do not hesitate to ask people for help, and review your exams.

Treasurer - Faiza Huissain

Hometown: Highland, California

Optometry School: Inter American University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry Class of 2025

Why I choose optometry: I chose optometry because I believe that vision is one of the most vital senses that many people take for granted. I got my glasses at a very young age and I hated wearing them because everyone in my family had 20/20 vision, so I felt like the outcast. It wasn't until years later (and many diopters later) I found an optometrist who made me feel comfortable wearing my glasses and gave me the option of contact lenses as well. After that moment I decided that I wanted to be on the other side of the phoropter and help people get that 20/20 in the same way that I did.

Passions outside of optometry: I was a makeup artist for 9 years before I started optometry school so I absolutely love all things glam and fashion. I also love to bake, read, and dance.

Interesting fact: I wanted to be an actress when I was young.

Why NOSA: Over the past few years I have come to learn what a wonderfully committed organization NOSA is in helping those who need it most. What NOSA does for its students and minority communities is inspiring and I want to be a part of that in any way I can be.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: You have a long, hard journey in front of you, and at some points, it will feel overwhelming and exhausting but always keep the end goal in mind and remember why you're here and what this means for you. Stay strong and don't hesitate to reach out if you ever need help.

Why I chose Optometry: Optometry drew me in because it offers a unique blend of science, technology, and patient care, providing countless ways to practice. Whether it's clinical work, community outreach, or cutting-edge research, optometry allows me to make a tangible difference in people's lives. I was also inspired by the opportunity to contribute to my community, particularly in addressing vision care disparities. Optometry not only aligns with my professional aspirations but also enables me to give back to the communities that shaped me.

Passions outside of optometry: I love spending quality time with my children and traveling.

Interesting fact: I served 6 years in the military, where I developed a strong sense of discipline and a passion for service that I now bring to my optometric career.

Why I chose Optometry: Many factors went into my decision of choosing optometry but the most vital were my experience when I had my first eye exam at age 10 and when I worked as an optician in college. I fell in love with the profession the moment I started working as an optician and I decided to explore more by shadowing a few optometrists around. I enjoyed every part of it and knew this was what I wanted my career to be.

Passions outside of optometry: I love reading books, going to concerts, visiting museums and traveling.

Interesting Fact: I started a podcast during my 2nd year of optometry school.

Why NOSA: I chose NOSA because of its dedication to providing service to underserved communities. I enjoy volunteering so I wanted a resource that will give me opportunities to serve and I found that with this organization. NOSA has provided me with great mentors, amazing colleagues and opened numerous doors for me that are more than enough.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: Figure out your best study method as soon as you can and don’t procrastinate. Take breaks, give yourself grace when things are not going the way you want, ask for help, and celebrate your wins!

Historian I - Angelica Moss

Hometown: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Optometry School:  Indiana University School of Optometry, Class of 2027

Why I chose optometry: I found Optometry later in life. What started as a part-time job in optical retail became a deep-seated passion for helping patients live their best lives. My background is in interior architecture; for years, I designed spaces that maximized functionality and brought clients' visions to life. But what good is a well-designed space if you need a quality vision to experience it? Optometry allows me to help people achieve their best vision so they can lead their lives to the fullest. I plan to combine my love of design with optometry by specializing in low-vision. Where I will have the opportunity to manage patient's ocular health and help them design their homes to meet their individual needs.

Passions outside of optometry:  In my downtime, I like to read books, binge-watch TV Shows, and do my nails.

Interesting fact: My favorite activity is Karaoke.

Why NOSA: I chose to participate in NOSA to make connections with optometrists and students outside my school. We're always told that Optometry is a small community and that we're one big family. Being part of NOSA is my way of meeting the whole family.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: Prioritize your mental health. There are always assignments or exams to study for, which is why it's important to have time away from school. A club, Bible study, exercise, baking, a long walk—whatever it is, find something that brings you joy and that is restorative.

Historian II - Emely Minino Soto

Hometown: Madison, MS

Optometry School:  New England College of Optometry, Class of 2025

Why I chose optometry: When I was 12, I was introduced to eye care for the first time. My optometrist was so patient and friendly, even though I was really scared of wearing glasses. As he guided me through the process, my fear turned into curiosity. Seeing how ocular disease has impacted my friends and family, I'm determined to work towards making eye care accessible for everyone, especially those in low-income or marginalized communities.

Passions outside of optometry:   Jesus, Dance, Foody, and Sleeping.

Interesting fact: I used to dance Salsa professionally.

Why NOSA: NOSA, to me, is more than a club/organization —it's a family, sharing a common mission and purpose. As a first-generation student, my dedication lies in fostering inclusivity in communities and setting an example for future generations. Their drive for social justice, diversifying the optometry field, and ensuring accessible eye care for marginalized communities deeply resonated with me, motivating my involvement in the organization. As an Atro-Latinx woman, I am dedicated to not only encouraging fellow minorities to enter the field of optometry but also to offering solace to minority patients in the future.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: Hey first-year students, my advice to you is to stay passionate, keep asking questions, and remember why you chose this path. Don't hesitate to ask for help and seek support from your peers and mentors, building a strong network early on will be invaluable throughout your journey. I also recommend attending conferences, that's where I found the most encouragement and motivation to keep going. I was truly inspired by those who came before me.

Parliamentarian - Lauren Price

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

School: University of Houston College of Optometry Class of 2025

Why I chose optometry: Identifying my purpose in impact, my decision to pursue a career in optometry was driven by my love for patient care with a sprinkle of a fashion element. Being under the care of a black optometrist for 12+ years has played a substantial role in my career choice.

Passions outside of Optometry: I have a lot, the game of golf being one. Playing this sport at the Division 1 level has exposed me to the art of negotiation, it’s expanded my network, and the game is filled with lessons on how to handle life situations. I value sharing that love with others, especially youth. I am also passionate about self expression, authenticity, and confidence. I exude most when I hit the dance floor or when my competitive edge is activated.

Interesting Fact: I obtained my BS in Biology with a pre-med concentration from The Real HU #Onyx11 #c/o2020

Why NOSA: NOSA has fed into me prior to my optometry school career through their HBCU mentorship program. Leadership within this organization has always been in the plan so it’s a privilege to be the national Parliamentarian for the second year upholding NOSA’s mission alongside my team members for organizational advancement.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: Keep your head down in your books, stay focused, remain patient, and be your own biggest advocate. You are here for a reason. Use your resources (ie. JOIN NOSA).

Passions outside of optometry: I love creating whether it's via social media content, art, or DIY’s.  Feels good seeing your vision come to life.

Why NOSA: I chose to be a part of the NOSA because it directly aligns my desire to aid underserved populations. Students like me work towards our goal of serving others while still in school, allowing us to make a positive impact on our community and the field of optometry.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: In your first year of optometry, always prioritize your mindset and mental health; they will be the guiding force to overcome the stress, exams, and proficiencies. Take time for self-care, always seek support when needed, and maintain a positive outlook to thrive in your academic journey.

What would I like to bring: I would like to bring more unity and fluidity in communication between NOSA chapters. This collaborative effort looks like more joint events, virtual meet and greets, and other activities that strengthen connections and promote a sense of community among the chapters.

NOA Student director -

Brittany Wright, OD, MS

Hometown: Chicago, IL

Optometry School: SCO, Southern College of Optometry

Why I chose Optometry: During undergrad, I knew healthcare was where I wanted to be but was not sure in what capacity. I decided to pursue a master's degree in biomedical research with encouragement from my undergrad research sponsor...I quickly realized I needed a little more interpersonal interaction; shadowed some healthcare professionals in my area and felt Optometry was the best fit to blend my love for science, health, and community!

Interesting fact: I am an avid Chicago Bears fan!!!

Why NOSA/NOA: NOSA was a source of support, encouragement, and resources during my time as an optometry student. NOSA provided my first opportunity to support this profession on a national stage as NOSA National President. Returning to the NOA is so important as it provides space to return all that was poured into me as student while helping the organization propel into new heights!

Why NOSA: When I was in optometry school, I didn't realize the true value of NOSA until the first convention I attended third year. Seeing all of the doctors who looked like me changed my life. The level of community I felt in an occupation where I was a minority was rejuvenating. I wanted to be a part of the organization that fueled that experience.

Any Advice for First-year Optometry Students: You belong! Regardless of how you feel, you belong in the optometric profession.
